Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

The students at Heritage Public School demonstrate their knowledge of the values outlined in the Board’s “Community of Character” wheel every day and are aware of the need to give back to their peers, community agencies and organizations from around the world. Our students and community members continue to participate in a variety of fund raising activities that benefit agencies such as the Cancer Society, United Way, World Vision, Ottawa Food Bank, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy.

Heritage has a Student Council that is made up of grade 8 students. They take on many leadership roles throughout the school. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we also acknowledge their contributions in our classrooms, school announcements, newsletters, assemblies, our principal’s report to school council, and end‐of‐year awards ceremonies.

Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications including Special Education, French as a Second Language, Music, Visual Arts, Guidance, Math and Computers in Education. Some staff hold Master’s degrees as well. They actively participate in numerous Board‐wide professional development activities and we recognize their initiative by supporting opportunities for continued professional growth. Our staff members willingly accept leadership roles to support student learning. They also provide students with extra‐curricular activities in the areas of sports, arts and music.

Our office and care staff members are instrumental in keeping the lines of communication open with our families as well as creating a welcoming atmosphere for them.

We recognize staff leadership via personal interactions with one another, letters of thanks, school announcements, school newsletters, assemblies, performance appraisals and our principal’s reports to School Council.

At Heritage Public School we are very fortunate to have many volunteers who help us on a regular basis. Our dedicated School Council meets monthly and provides input and feedback on a variety of school initiatives. The fundraising sub‐committee works very hard to organize many and all funds raised are turned back to the school to make Heritage a better place to learn and work. We recognize parent/guardian and volunteer leadership through letters of thanks, announcements at staff meetings, through school announcements and school newsletters. We hold a volunteer appreciation event every spring to thank and honour our volunteers.

We are very fortunate to have the support from the local Lions Club. They introduced a Vision Screening program in the school and have also sponsored our school for the No Child Without program, in partnership with the Canadian Medic Alert Foundation. We are grateful to the TD Canada Bank for providing tickets to the Ottawa 67s games as recognition for student success. We work closely with the Ottawa Police Services through our School Resource Officer.

We appreciate our community partners and recognize them through our school announcements, school newsletters and web site, principal’s report to school council, and thank you cards. We also invite them to special events and award ceremonies.
